Lantana is a coastal town in Palm Beach County, Florida, on the Intracoastal Waterway between West Palm Beach and Boynton Beach. Incorporated in 1921, it is among the county's oldest communities, and its population is about 12,200. The town retains the character of an old-Florida fishing village even as the surrounding county has urbanized. Lantana's history reaches back to its incorporation with just 22 residents voting in the first election, when the town covered one square mile and held about 100 people. It grew through the mid-twentieth century alongside the rest of South Florida, and for a period it was the publishing headquarters of the National Enquirer. Today the town is the fifteenth-largest of Palm Beach County's 39 municipalities. The town's identity is tied to the water. Lantana Municipal Beach offers a sandy shoreline, kayak launch, and pier, while the Lake Worth Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway provide boating, fishing, and paddling. Bicentennial Park and the town's public library, with more than 24,000 volumes, anchor community life. Palm Beach County School District serves local students. For residents, Lantana offers a walkable, water-oriented lifestyle with direct access to the beaches, the lagoon, and the conveniences of the larger Palm Beach County coast.
